Vic: Paintings worth thousands taken in gallery raid

MELBOURNE, Dec 19 AAP - Thieves stole paintings worth several thousand dollars from
a Melbourne art gallery last night, police said today.

The thieves took seven original oil paintings set in ornate gold frames from the Danica
Art Gallery in southern suburban Murrumbeena after they smashed the front door of the
gallery and switched off the building's power.

Police declined to reveal the precise value of the paintings.

Detectives said the thieves used a rock to smash their way into the gallery sometime
between 5pm yesterday and 9.15am this morning.

Police are seeking a man and a woman they wish to speak to about the robbery.

Both are about 35 years old and the man is about 170cm tall with short blond hair.

The woman has shoulder-length wavy dark hair and is about 165cm tall.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
