Germany shooting (ERFURT)
The hero of the tragic shooting at a high school in Germany has told how his formerpupil suddenly stopped the killing spree after gunning down 16 people, 13 of them teachers.
RAINER HEISE (pron: Ry-nuhr Hy-zuh) has told German television he heard shots and wasarranging the evacuation of pupils, when he realised someone was nearby.
He said he turned around, saw a black silhouette with a face hidden by a balaclava.
He ripped off the mask and recognised expelled student ROBERT STEINHAEUSER (pron: Stine-hoysuhr).
The teacher said he challenged STEINHAEUSER to shoot him too, but to look into hiseyes as he did so.
STEINHAEUSER replied he'd had enough, and was shoved by the teacher into an empty classroomwhere he was locked in.
Shortly afterwards, the 19-year-old killer who was expelled from the Gutenberg highschool in Erfurt two months ago, shot himself to death.
Indemnity Patterson (CANBERRA)
Federal Health Minister KAY PATTERSON has promised that doctors' services won't bedisrupted if Australia's biggest medical insurer goes bust.
But she's refused to give details of the government's plan to protect doctors if UnitedMedical Protection collapses.
UMP's directors are due to meet tomorrow amid speculation they could call in administratorsor go into liquidation.
Senator PATTERSON has told Channel Seven she's not going to preempt what's going tohappen at that meeting.
But she says the prime minister has given a guarantee that doctors' services won'tbe disrupted as a result of the medical indemnity issue.
Maternity Vaile (Canberra)
Expectant mothers have been given little hope that the federal government will backpaid maternity leave.
National Party deputy leader MARK VAILE says that due to the government's commitmentson border security and defence funding in the next Budget, there isn't much room to manoeuvre.
Mr VAILE has told the Nine Network a flexible approach should be maintained and thematter should principally be left up to individual enterprises.
The opposition has said a future Labor government would legislate for paid maternityleave, with the responsibility to be shared between government, business and unions.

Australia's competition watchdog says it has no reason to apologise for making publicits investigation into allegations that oil companies have colluded on petrol prices.
Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairman ALLAN FELS says there's hugepublic interest in the issue.
And he's told the Seven Network the public is capable of differentiating between aninvestigation and proven claims.
ACCC officers raided eight oil and petrol company sites in Melbourne, Sydney and Newcastlelast week, searching for proof the companies colluded to fix prices.
The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry says that by making public the investigation,the ACCC has already damaged the oil companies' reputations.

A woman in her 60s is on life support and five other people, including a baby, arebeing treated for burns and smoke inhalation after a house fire in NSW's central west.
A NSW Fire Brigade spokesman says the four-bedroom brick house at Elliot Place, Orange,was well alight when fire crews arrived shortly after 7am (AEST).
Twenty firefighters from three crews took about an hour to extinguish the blaze.
A man and a woman in their 60s, a woman in her 30s and three children in the houseat the time were taken to Orange Base Hospital.
The older woman was later flown to Concord Hospital in Sydney in critical condition.
Backpacker (BRISBANE)
Queensland police will investigate claims that officers ignored a telephone call tellingthem of a woman's scream on the night British backpacker CAROLINE STUTTLE was murdered.
Commissioner BOB ATKINSON says the Ethical Standards Command will conduct a thoroughinternal investigation into the allegation that police failed to respond to the information.
Police believe Ms STUTTLE died after she fell or was thrown nine metres from a bridgein the coastal city of Bundaberg on April 10.
A report in the Brisbane Sunday Mail claims none of the police patrols working thatnight were asked to investigate a report by a woman driving over the bridge who said sheheard a scream and saw the shadowy form of a man looking over the railing.

Three bikers are dead and least 12 people wounded after a clash between rival motorcyclegangs in a casino in the US state of Nevada.
Police say the violence erupted when a member of the Mongol motorcycle gang walkedinto a group of Hells Angels at Harrah's casino.
Authorities say 60 to 70 people, armed with guns and knives, were involved in the violenceand numerous people were arrested.
The shooting occurred during the 20th annual River Run, a weekend gathering of motorcycleclubs that brought up to 80,000 people into the resort town of Laughlin.

Israel's army says it's killed one of three Palestinian commandos responsible for theshooting spree at a West Bank Jewish settlement that left four Israelis dead.
The gunman was killed by troops hunting the perpetrators of the shooting rampage inthe southern West Bank settlement of Adora.
