ROME (AP) — A simple Cabinet reshuffle degenerated Wednesday into Italy's latest political scandal, with accusations of horse trading, Mafia ties and a rare public criticism by the president of Premier Silvio Berlusconi's choice for agriculture minister.
President Giorgio Napolitano swore in Francesco Saverio Romano as agriculture minister Wednesday. But his office immediately put out a statement saying Napolitano had "reservations" about the nomination since Romano is technically under investigation for alleged Mafia association.
Napolitano didn't reject the nomination, given there is a formal request pending to shelve the case, which has been around for years without Romano …
