Fed: EU must show unity on security: Downer
Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER has warned European Union nations to unite againstterrorism and rogue nations like Iraq -- or risk doing permanent damage to internationalsecurity.
He was speaking at the Australian National University in Canberra ahead of an Australia-EuropeanCommission ministerial meeting in Melbourne.
Mr DOWNER says the opposition of France and Germany to tough action against Iraq hadopened serious divisions within the EU, as members countries like Spain and Italy supportedUS-led action.
Mr DOWNER says the EU needs to show a greater willingness to help ensure internationalsecurity when the union expands from the current 15 member nations to 25 next year.
He says the EU could begin repairing its international image if it took a meaningfulrole in the post-war reconstruction in Iraq.
