Fed: Investigation already underway into cause of boat explosion

Investigations are already underway into the manner and cause of the explosion that
killed at least three suspected asylum seekers on a boat off the northern coast of Australia
this morning.

Spearheaded by Assistant Commissioner MARK MCADIE from the NT's regional crime service
.. the taskforce could lay charges if it finds the explosion or fire was deliberate.

Deputy Commissioner Acting Commissioner BRUCE WERNHAM says NT police will investigate
because it occurred at the Ashmore and Cartier Islands.

Mr WERNHAM couldn't confirm reports the boat was doused in petrol before it exploded
.. killing three people and injuring up to 50 more this morning.
