NSW:Police smash newly-formed ice drug ring

SYDNEY, Aug 10 AAP - Police have smashed an ice drug ring they believe could have imported
hundreds of kilograms into Australia.

Five Malaysian nationals, arrested on Tuesday in Sydney and in Victoria, have been
charged with importing a prohibited drug.

Detective Superintendent Scott Cook, who leads the Asian Crime Squad of NSW Police,
says the drug network was in its infancy.

"The aspirations of the group were to import hundreds of kilos of ice to Australia,"

Det Supt Cook told reporters in Sydney on Wednesday.

"They had aspirations to distribute drugs in Melbourne, in Sydney and on the Gold Coast."

All of the men were charged with supplying a large commercial quantity of a prohibited
drug and were refused bail to appear in various courts on Wednesday.

One was on his way to Sydney Airport, another was arrested at a restaurant in Chinatown,
in central Sydney. Those men, aged 28 and 48, were refused bail to appear at Waverley
Local Court and Central Local Court.

A 38-year-old man arrested in Cabramatta will appear at Liverpool Local Court, while
a 39-year-old man arrested in Hurstville will appear at Sutherland Local Court.

A fifth man, aged 23, was arrested by Australian Federal Police in Victoria.

Police allege about 2kg of ice and 2.1kg of heroin have been seized since the operation began.

They have an estimated potential street value of about $4 million.

NT: Invaiding cane toad evolving with faster, longer legs: study

Eds: Embargoed until 0500 Thursday, Feb 16

By Karen Michelmore

DARWIN, Feb 16 AAP - Australia's hated cane toads are evolving - growing faster, longer
legs as they rampage through the nation's tropics.

Researchers have clocked the toxic pests hopping up to two kilometres in a single night,
or more than 50km a year - five times quicker than their predecessors travelled in the
1940s to 1960s.

"There is very clear evidence that toads are evolving rapidly," says Professor Rick
Shine, from the University of Sydney's School of Biological Sciences.

Scientists have been examining the warty pests at Fogg Dam, 60km east of Darwin, for
a year, attaching radio transmitters to track how far and fast they can travel.

Their research, published today in the scientific journal Nature, found the first toads
invading an area now have longer, faster legs - which make up 45 per cent of their body
length.

When the cane toad was first introduced in Queensland 70 years ago - in a disastrous
attempt to control insects in sugar cane fields - its legs made up about 35-40 per cent
of its body length, Prof Shine said.

"Frogs and toads generally are slow moving little creatures," Prof Shine said.

"(But) our toads are moving north west, and they are just going as fast as they can."

He said it was possible toads were evolving to be faster because there was some advantage
to being first to invade an area - either juicier grubs or less competition for food.

Cane toads have marched across Queensland, northern NSW, and the NT, poisoning millions
of native animals including in world heritage-listed Kakadu National Park.

They now cover more than a million square kilometres of tropical and subtropical Australia.

The report came as the NT renewed its attack on the toad, which is fast approaching Darwin.

Locals are being urged to check their yards and nearby parks for cane toads on March
14 - the official "Not in My Backyard Day" of action.

There has been fierce debate over the best way to kill a cane toad since federal MP
Dave Tollner last year called on locals to smash them with golf clubs and turn the eradication
of toads into a new blood sport.

The RSPCA has urged locals to wipe hemorrhoid cream on the toad before humanely freezing
them, and community group FrogWatch is mulching up carcasses into Australia's first toad
garden fertiliser.

Fed: Senator gives grocery site four out of 10

CANBERRA, Aug 7 AAP - A coalition senator who created her own grocery price watch website
has given the Rudd government's version "four out of 10".

Queensland Liberal senator Sue Boyce's ShopSmart website, launched last month, also
has an added feature - a comparative unit pricing calculator.

Both websites source grocery prices from a monthly survey of supermarkets.

"I've had people already tell me that they're not finding the (GROCERYchoice) website
terribly useful," Senator Boyce told AAP.

"I think it would be fantastic if we've got a national website that does help people,
but I'm not sure that this is it."

Although the ShopSmart website was set up specifically for Queensland, it was set up
for "almost no cost at all", she said.

The government version, administered by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission,
is reported to have cost $13 million.

There were problems with the GROCERYchoice average pricing model, she said.

"If you look at it, you get an average price for all of Brisbane, which is not a terribly
useful thing if you've got hundreds of supermarkets to choose from in that area.

"And again, you get prices from an average price from Longreach to Gladstone which
doesn't help people either."

Senator Boyce rated GROCERYchoice a "four out of 10 for a good idea".

"They certainly need to do a lot more work to make it properly useful and relevant
to people who are going to the supermarket, desperate to save some dollars," she said.

Fed: McGauran says lockdown working so far=2

But Mr McGauran could not say whether the Melbourne Cup would be affected by the outbreak.

"It's too early to say," the minister told the Nine Network.

"The problem is that these race horses that are going to compete in the distance races
through the spring carnival need these preliminary races to get fit so if the race is
deferred they obviously don't get that race fitness."

Any moves by racing authorities in Victoria to defy the ban to allow the Spring Racing
Carnival to go ahead would be extremely unwise, he said.

"It's true racing programming is a matter for the race clubs, but the governments,
both state and federal, want to contain the outbreak of this exotic disease and you do
need a national approach for that."

Sydney horse trainer John O'Shea said he is confident racing will be back on track
well before the Melbourne Cup.

"I don't think there will be any affect (on) the Spring Racing Carnival long term,"

he told the Nine Network.

"You'll find that because of the due diligence that we've applied here in the last
week or so that we'll get on top of this relatively quickly and we should be back racing
at worst within a fortnight."

But the local racing industry had already suffered severely becasue of the outbreak.

"If we can't go to the races then obviously we struggle to make ends meet," Mr O'Shea said.

"Some of our staff have had to be put off, they're still on pay, but they've had to
be put off because they've come into contact with some of the horses at Centennial Park.

So it's a tough time for everyone."

Fed: PM backs broadcaster Jones but not his comments

CANBERRA, April 12 AAP - Prime Minister John Howard has continued his defence of embattled
broadcaster Alan Jones, but stopped short of endorsing controversial comments he made
in the lead-up to the Cronulla race riots.

Mr Howard today avoided saying whether he agreed with a listener's comments Jones read
out on air that have drawn the wrath of the communications watchdog.

In the days before the riot, Jones read out comments calling on bikie gangs to confront
"Lebanese thugs" at the Cronulla railway station.

Asked if he agreed with the comments, Mr Howard said he normally voiced his personal
views by responding to direct questions.

"I don't normally transmit my views through saying I agree with something that somebody
else has said when I don't know the full context of what may have been said, I'm not falling
for that," Mr Howard told journalists in Canberra.

But Mr Howard repeated his earlier defence of Jones.

"He represents the views of a lot of people on a lot of issues," Mr Howard said.

"I haven't read all of the transcript about fighting or anything, but I make the point
that I made yesterday, and that is that he is a very good broadcaster.

"I don't believe that he is an agent of prejudice and discrimination in the community,
that some have implied."

The Australian Communication and Media Authority (ACMA) this week ruled Jones encouraged
violence and vilified people before the notorious Cronulla race riot during his breakfast
program on commercial Sydney radio station 2GB.

In its findings released on Tuesday, the ACMA said 2GB's licence holder, Harbour Broadcasting,
twice breached the broadcast code by airing certain comments by Jones in the days before
the December 2005 Cronulla riot.

Jones' comments contravened the code because they were likely to "encourage violence
or brutality" and "vilify people of Lebanese background and of Middle Eastern background",
the ACMA said.

But the broadcaster yesterday lashed out at the communications watchdog, accusing it
of being biased and inexperienced in the world of talkback radio.

France violence enters 10th night with cars, nursery school torched

JOHN LEICESTER, Associated Press Writer
AP Worldstream
11-05-2005
Dateline: ACHERES, France
Youths armed with gasoline bombs torched scores of vehicles, nursery schools and other targets Saturday from the Paris region to resort cities on the Mediterranean in the 10th consecutive night of violence to rock France, police said.

Five classrooms of the Sleeping Beauty Nursery School in Grigny, in the Essonne region south of Paris, went up in flames as well as two classrooms of another school, police said. It was at least the third nursery school set ablaze in several days.

The previous night, 900 vehicles were torched in the worst wave of arson since the urban violence began Oct. 27.

By 10 p.m. (2100 GMT) Saturday, about 100 vehicles were torched, police said. France-Info radio reported residents catching two 14-year-olds trying to light a fire in Drancy, northeast of Paris, and turning them over to police.

Some 2,300 police were being brought into the Paris region to bolster security, France-Info said.

Police have been forced to adapt to the ever-changing situation, deploying a helicopter for a second night in a row in the suburbs northeast of Paris, where the violence has been concentrated, and small teams of officers to chase down youths speeding from one attack to another in cars and on motorbikes.

The new tactics yielded more than 250 arrests late Friday and early Saturday.

Arson attacks were reported in the Paris region and cities to the north, south, east and west, many known for their calm, like the cultural bastion of Avignon in southern France and the resort cities of Nice and Cannes, where cars were torched, a police officer said.

The officer, with the Interior Ministry's operational center tracking the violence, was not authorized to speak publicly and asked not to be named.

Arson also was reported in Nantes, in the southwest, the Lille region in the north and Saint-Dizier, in the Ardennes region east of Paris. In the eastern city of Strasbourg, 18 cars were set alight in full daylight, police there said.

In the Essonne region outside Paris, a recycling factory also was set afire and at least 35 vehicles torched, a police officer said.

Numerous vehicles were torched in the Seine-Saint-Denis region, northeast of Paris, where the riots erupted after two teenage boys were accidentally electrocuted as they hid from police, apparently thinking they were being pursued. French authorities have denied that police were to blame.

The violence, however, is forcing France to confront anger long-simmering in its suburbs, where many Africans and their French-born children live on society's margins, struggling with unemployment, poor housing, racial discrimination, crime and lack of opportunities.

From an outburst of fury over the deaths of the two teenagers, the unrest is taking on unprecedented scope and intensity.

In quiet Acheres, on the edge of the St. Germain forest west of the capital, arsonists torched a nursery school late Friday, where part of the roof caved in, and about a dozen cars in four attacks over an hour.

Mayor Alain Outreman tried to cool tempers as some residents demanded the army be deployed, or suggested that citizens band together to protect neighborhoods.

"We are not going to start militias," he said. "You would have to be everywhere."

In one particularly malevolent attack, youths in the eastern Paris suburb of Meaux prevented paramedics from evacuating a sick person from a housing project by pelting them and torching a waiting ambulance.

Anger has spread to the Internet, with blogs mourning the youths. Alongside messages of condolence and appeals for calm are insults targeting police, threats of more violence and warnings that the unrest will feed support for France's anti-immigration extreme right.

France's interior minister has warned of possible heavy sentences for torching cars.

Most rioting has been in towns with low-income housing projects where unemployment and distrust of police run high. But in a new development, arsonists were moving beyond their heavily policed neighborhoods to attack others with less security, national police spokesman Patrick Hamon said.

There appeared to be no coordination between separate groups in different areas, Hamon said. But within gangs, he added, youths are communicating by cell phones or e-mails.

On Saturday morning, more than 1,000 people took part in a silent march in one of the worst-hit suburbs, Aulnay-sous-Bois, filing past housing projects and the wrecks of burned cars. One white banner read "No to violence."

Anger was fanned days ago when a tear gas bomb exploded in a mosque in Clichy-sous-Bois, north of Paris _ the same suburb where the youths were electrocuted.

Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy also has inflamed passions by referring to troublemakers as "scum."

The director of the Great Mosque of Paris, Dalil Boubakeur, who met Saturday with Villepin, urged the government to choose its words carefully and send a message of peace.

"In such difficult circumstances, every word counts," Boubakeur said.

Acidity in a soil may be due to the leaching out of cations when precipitation exceeds evapotranspiration. The cations are replaced by hydrogen ions. Other factors promoting acidity in a soil include the nature of the vegetation, and thus the humus, and the acidity of the parent rock. Examples of acid soils are podzols and brown earths.

The term ‘acid’ as applied to rocks has an entirely different meaning. See acid rock.

Navigation Technologies Unveils First Eastern European Navigable Digital Maps; NAVTECH(R) Maps Are Now Available in Czech Republic and Slovakia.

CHICAGO -- Navigation Technologies, a leading provider of digital maps for vehicle navigation, Internet / wireless applications and business solutions, today announced NAVTECH(R) maps are now available for the Czech Republic and Slovakia for the first time. With this release, Navigation Technologies is introducing the first navigable digital maps of any Eastern European countries.

The Czech Republic is a critical addition to NAVTECH maps given the number of major European roads that pass through the Czech Republic and are integral to routing throughout Western Europe. With the availability of Czech Republic NAVTECH maps, seamless direct routing from points in Germany to Austria, for example, is now possible for the first time.

Augmenting Navigation Technologies' detailed coverage of Western Europe, the new digital map of the Czech Republic features detailed coverage of Prague, including street names, municipal boundaries, and points of interest -- plus the primary connector road network throughout the Czech Republic. It also includes coverage of 13 county capitals known as "Kraj-cities." Every major road is available, enabling long haul routes. The Slovakia release features major European roads and allows seamless routing from major cities to a variety of destinations.

The completion of both digital maps offers seamless mapping guidance from Austria (Vienna) to Bratislava, or, conversely, a direct route from Bratislava to Germany through the Czech Republic, via its capitol city, Prague.

"As a global company, Navigation Technologies' strategy is to expand coverage into strategic areas to meet growing market demands, while maintaining the detailed coverage in our existing digital maps as well," said John MacLeod, Executive Vice President, North American and World Markets, Navigation Technologies Corporation.

Bloodshot eyes and double vision?

Before you keep your eyes glued to that small computer screen at the office or on your smart phone surfing the net and checking out your friends on Facebook and Twitter, think about the effects this might have on your eyes.

A Cape Town doctor has warned that while the increasing use of computers and cellphones may be good for technological advancement, this is having a negative impact on people's eye health with more people reporting strain-related eye problems such as blurred vision, eye fatigue, neck pains and headaches.

But even more scary were the statics that showed that young people were the most vulnerable.

Dr Wayne Hodgkinson, an optometrist who runs his practice in Fish Hoek in the Cape Peninsula, said he was seeing more patients with computer vision syndrome (CVS), a condition that was usually caused by extended and uninterrupted periods of focusing on a computer screen or television.

The temporary condition is characterised by uncomfortable symptoms such as dry, irritated and sometimes watery eyes, double or blurred vision, sore eyes, fatigue, light sensitivity and bloodshot eyes.

Medical experts estimate that the condition affects between 80 and 90 percent of people who spend about three hours or more a day at a computer.

While traditionally the high-risk group was office workers, according to Hodgkinson this trend has changed, with more young people reporting the syndrome symptoms. And it looks like the easy access of internet and social networks on cellphones could be the cause of the upsurge.

"Alarmingly I am finding these same problems in younger patients, more than likely due to the popularity of social sites like Facebook and Twitter, and others and the excessive time spent staring at computer monitors, BlackBerries, iPhones and the like," he said.

He warned parents to be vigilant about vision symptoms associated with regular extended periods of computer work, citing the demands of "fine motor skills from young eyes that have not yet developed" as problematic.

He also pointed out that poor workplace conditions and improper work habits could contribute to the syndrome.

"When focussing on a fixed object, the normal blink reflex is not stimulated and dry, uncomfortable red eyes are the result. Glare from artificial light reflecting off the computer monitor causes severe eye strain and the constant focusing of eyes without rest will cause fatigue and headaches," he said.

Businessman Richard Bing, 52, is a self-proclaimed computer nerd who was diagnosed with the syndrome five years ago.

After experiencing burning and sore eyes, short-sightedness and double vision he had himself checked by an optometrist. "Initially I thought that the short-sightedness was just ageing. It never really crossed my mind that computer use might have anything to do with the tiredness and irritability. When I was diagnosed with the syndrome I looked at the doctor and I was like 'What are you talking about?' I didn't know what the condition was all about," he said.

Giulia Criscuolo, a pharmacist at OTC Pharma, said while the syndrome was preventable and could be minimised by spending less time in front of a computer screen, treatment of this condition was available in a form of chemical lubricants such as natural tears or decongestants.

There were also homeopathic products suitable for everyday use such as Similisan computer eye drops that helped relieve strained eye muscles.

The syndrome can also be minimised by taking minimal preventative steps such as blinking more often, avoiding excessive bright light, adjusting or tilting your monitor, using computer reading glasses, and by taking frequent breaks away from your computer or cellphone screen.

Before you keep your eyes glued to that small screen, think about the effects this might have on your eyes.

Internet queries and methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus surveillance.(DISPATCHES)

Staphylococcus aureus is the most common bacterial pathogen isolated from human infections (1). Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates are strains constitutively resistant to [beta]-lactam antimicrobial drugs. MRSA was initially largely confined to patients with health care exposures (2), but in the late 1990s, genetically distinct strains emerged and spread rapidly among healthy persons in the United States. These new strains, known as community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA), differ epidemiologically and genetically from older strains (2,3). CA-MRSA strains have become the most common cause of skin infections in US emergency departments (4).

There is no systematic surveillance system in the United States for MRSA. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tracks a limited group of infections defined as invasive through the Active Bacterial Core (ABC) surveillance system reported from 9 regions. These include MRSA infections at normally sterile sites. In a 2007 report, CDC used ABC surveillance to estimate that there were 94,000 cases and 18,650 deaths caused by invasive MRSA disease in the United States in 2005 (5). This report received extensive media coverage and increased public awareness of MRSA (6).

Recent efforts to overcome surveillance limitations, in particular delay and limited geographic coverage, have included Internet protocol (IP) surveillance. IP surveillance monitors Internet search terms related to a specific disease,

assuming that greater disease activity correlates with more searches. The best known IP surveillance is Google Flu Trends (7), although other researchers have created additional models (8,9). Given the lack of comprehensive surveillance, we examined whether Google search data might productively supplement existing systems to track the changing epidemiology of MRSA infections. Because MRSA, unlike influenza, is unfamiliar to many persons, we hypothesized that Internet search activity might reflect curiosity inspired by news reports and information-seeking related to actual infections or symptoms.

The Study

We used the Google Trends database to obtain the proportion of all Google searches that contained the words "MRSA" or "staph." "Staph" was included because many news stories refer to MRSA as "antibiotic resistant staph." "Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus" was too infrequently searched to be useful. Google Trends reports search activity relative to the average number of similar queries in February 2004. We only included US searches determined from IP addresses.

We extracted counts of US newspaper, wire service, and radio and television stories mentioning "MRSA" or "staph" from the LexisNexis Academic database. We spot-checked stories with the word "staph" to confirm they were about MRSA. One event or medical publication could generate multiple news stories. We hypothesized that the volume of news coverage captured the relative effect of the story on search behavior.

We used quarterly hospital discharge data from the University HealthSystems Consortium Clinical Database, which includes >90% of US academic medical centers, to calculate the proportion of hospitalizations including an MRSA diagnosis. These data were a proxy for true MRSA incidence. We used the diagnostic code for MRSA from the International Classification of Disease, 9th Revision (V09.0). MRSA hospitalizations include CA-MRSA infections that led to hospitalization and infections that developed during a hospitalization. This database includes [less than or equal to]99 codes per discharge, more than other national hospital discharge databases. The likelihood of recording an MRSA diagnosis increases with longer lists of codes because of the many concurrent conditions in complex hospitalizations. Some medical centers systematically used <99 diagnoses fields. We adjusted hospitalization rates for the maximum number of codes submitted by each medical center each year. Data after the 3rd quarter of 2008 were not included because of implementation of a nationwide coding change for MRSA.

We related quarterly variation in MRSA hospitalizations to quarterly variations in search queries and news stories in a linear regression model. Because of the effect of the 2007 CDC report on MRSA awareness, we tested 2 indicator variables: 1 to capture the spike in search activity during the 4th quarter of 2007, and 1 to account for higher levels of search activity in subsequent quarters (10). These 2 indicators enable the model baseline to differ during the quarters before, during, and after the 4th quarter of 2007, while keeping the relationship between hospitalization rates and Internet searches and news counts the same during the 3 periods. All statistical analyses were performed in Stata version 10.0 (StataCorp LP, College Station, TX, USA).

Details of the model and statistical methods are available in the online Technical Appendix (www.cdc.gov/EID/content/17/6/1068-Techapp.pdf). Weekly news counts are shown in Figure 1. They range from 4 to 130 before the October 2007 peak of 719, related to the CDC report, the effect of which appears to linger. The prior peak of 130 in April 2005 was related to articles in the New England Journal of Medicine describing necrotizing fasciitis associated with MRSA and the emergence of CA-MRSA in 2001-2002 (11,12).

Quarterly variation in Google searches for "MRSA" and "staph" are shown in Figure 2. Search behavior changed markedly after the October 2007 publication. In addition to the spike, there was a subsequent change in the relative frequency of search term "MRSA" compared with "staph." Note that the news count peak in 2005 is not seen in the Google searches, and the peak in the Google searches in the 3rd quarter of 2006 is not apparent in the news counts.

Google queries were a useful predictor of MRSA hospitalizations and explained 33% of quarterly variation when used alone. Adding news counts to the model resulted in increasing the percentage of explained variation only modestly to 41%. The news counts were not a significant addition to the model (p = 0.18).

Our final model, which includes search queries and the 2 temporal indicator variables, but not the news counts, is shown in the Table. The correlation between model predictions and observed hospitalization rates was 0.93 (p<0.001). Although data after 2007 are insufficient for definitive comparison, a better prediction before than after the 4th quarter of 2007 is suggested (Figure 2).

Conclusions

We report an IP surveillance model for MRSA incidence. We hypothesized that news coverage for such an unfamiliar disease would strongly influence search activity. However, news coverage did not affect the relationship between search queries and hospitalization rates before the 2007 CDC report. The congruence of the Internet search activity and the hospital discharge data suggest that their temporal pattern represents the actual trend in MRSA: an increasing incidence during 2004-2007, with a suggestion of seasonal variation, and no increase in 2008. This pattern is not the same pattern documented by the ABC surveillance data for invasive MRSA infections (13).

[FIGURE 1 OMITTED]

The unfamiliarity of the public with MRSA poses a challenge to using Google Trends. Searches using the phonetic misspelling "mersa" show a parallel trend to searches using "MRSA," although they are less frequent, and the correctly spelled "methicillin" is too rare to track.

Hospitalized MRSA infections include hospital-associated MRSA infections and the more serious CA-MRSA infections. Because evidence has shown that invasive hospital-associated MRSA infections decreased during the study period (13), the generally upward secular trend in MRSA hospitalizations is more likely to represent the trend in CA-MRSA, especially because we now know that most MRSA infections have onset in the community (3). The inability to distinguish community and health care infections is nonetheless a limitation of the Google and the hospitalization data. Although some hospital databases include more hospitals, they include fewer diagnostic codes. Therefore, there are no additional comprehensive data available for MRSA incidence. The lack of any true standard for MRSA incidence is why IP surveillance is potentially useful.

Looking for a Top-Class Copywriter / Writer? Wordfruit Makes It Easy and Cost-Effective.

NEW YORK and LONDON, May 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Wordfruit, http://www.wordfruit.com, an online copywriter recruitment service, launches a new business model which helps marketing and advertising professionals find the right copywriters for jobs without any up-front recruitment fee. The model is built to answer to the needs of both clients and high-standard writers.

Wordfruit provides industry professionals in advertising, marketing, PR, and design with connections to top-class copywriters and other writers for freelance, contract, and full-time jobs. Managers in SMEs also use the service.

Clients can send their job description to Wordfruit staff, who will provide a shortlist of writers matched to the job, or they can open up the role to all possible matches, and writers who are available for the job will get in touch. Clients can also search through writers' profiles and approach writers direct.

There are now 423 vetted, world-class copywriters at http://www.wordfruit.com and more writers applying to join every day. The writers are from all the main English-language speaking countries, with approximately 60 per cent from the USA.

Copywriters do not pay any fees, and the service reduces their time spent looking for work, with Wordfruit acting as an agent internationally. Wordfruit has been running for several months, serving clients in the U.S., UK, Australia, and Europe.

"The best copywriters are here because we've built a model that works well for top copywriters. That's why industry-professional clients use the service," said Wordfruit MD, Richard Clunan. "Writers who want to join can apply to Wordfruit on the strength of their past work, but we will only take in the best."

Clunan claims the Wordfruit service can save clients 90% of the commission they would be charged by headhunters and traditional recruitment agencies: "Traditional agencies take a percentage of salary, often between 10% and 33%, so the fees for sourcing someone for an $80K job for example, could range from $8K to $26K," said Clunan. "By comparison for the same role, Wordfruit matching fees are only 7%, and we have low maximum caps from $197 on the total commission payable. It's a lean system, giving clients huge savings on their recruitment spend. Plus there is no up-front fee."

Wordfruit is offering introductory savings of a further 50% to clients who complete the online survey at http://www.wordfruit.com

Another advantage for clients, according to Clunan, is the breadth of experience in the Wordfruit database: "At Wordfruit, we have writers with talent in all things words-related, from advertising copy and concept work, direct mail and web content, to scriptwriting and journalism," said Clunan. "Our clients get the best writer for the job, in the easiest and most cost-effective way."

Clunan came up with the idea for Wordfruit when working as a freelance copywriter: "It was clear to me there was a gap in the market. The job-bidding sites work well for the low-end of the market, but for that very reason, great copywriters are driven away. And the regular recruitment agencies fail to maximize the benefits of the Internet," said Clunan.

"I had a strong understanding of the market and a good knowledge of what was out there to connect writers and clients. I wanted to build a service that works better for clients and for writers," he said.

Trailblazer.(finalentry)

In 1963 Glenda M. Bayless of Apple Valley became a CPA and dove headfirst into what was mainly a man's profession. She worked tirelessly as a self-employed CPA and board chair of Inland Community Bank, which she helped start. As time went on and her successes grew, Bayless paved the way for future career women to follow in her footsteps. For these reasons, and others. Bayless is this year's recipient of the CalCPA Trailblazer Award, part of the Women to Watch Awards, awarded at the 2010 CalCPA Women's Leadership Forum.

Bayless' list of professional and civic involvement is long and impressive. A CalCPA member for 47 years, she has taught classes throughout her career and prides herself on the employees she has helped put through school.

California CPA caught up with Bayless amidst a busy and demanding schedule to discuss her journey in the accounting profession.

Tell us about the early days of your career.

My career as a CPA happened by chance in 1963. 1 never had any intention of becoming a CPA and did not have any idea what a CPA did. A former employer, Davis Wire, paid for my education and salary with the intention that I would return to the company and work lull time with them after I completed my two-year internship with a local CPA firm.

At that time there were very few women in any university accounting and business classes, and in many classes I was the only woman with about 50 to 100 male classmates. When I would arrive late to my classes--as I had to drive about 40 miles to my night classes after working all day--my male counterparts and instructors would always clap their hands and make comments about me being late all the time.

I wanted to get through my classes as soon as possible, as 1 was starting a little late in life at age 33. I had married at age 17 in Idaho, had a daughter at 18, moved to California and worked many jobs, divorced my husband and was single at the time I decided to gel my four-year degree. While 1 was taking classes at (Jul State Long Beach, I took a course in taxation and became interested in learning more about taxes. 1 got good grades and mv tax instructor encouraged unto work with a CPA for a couple years to complete my two-year internship and eventually become a CPA. I went on to teach tax courses for several years.

My first job in the accounting world was with a firm in Santa Ana. There was only one woman CPA to every 99 male CPAs at the time I started working there. It was all men at that firm, which had something like 30 accountants. Those guys gave me a pretty hard time for a while, until 1 finally went to the boss and said, "Get these guys off my back or I'm walking out."

I eventually moved to Rialto for my husband's work. He was a dynamite distributor for DuPont. We had to move to a place where we wouldn't blow up people. It was in Rialto that I started my own firm, Bayless Accountancy Corporation, in September 1965. Over the years my firm has been located primarily in San Bernardino, Rialto, Apple Valley, Laguna Beach and Laguna Miguel. In the beginning (here were very few woman-owned firms and I may have been among the first.

What are the biggest changes you noticed in the profession?

The biggest change is the type of equipment we used. The young-people don't know anything about comptometers, which I started out using. We didn't have any computers when I started. My first computer was an enormous monster that had to be kept in an air conditioned room and cost me $ 1.6,000! The advancement, of technology since then, and things like being able to do tax returns on the internet, is a really nice change for me.

Things have changed on a more personal level, too. 1 will always remember how I was treated when I started my business and bought a building. I was the owner of the business, but they made me get my husband s signature for the account before turning on my utilities. I thought it was unnecessary, but those were the rules at the time. So I started using my initials so when people looked it up in the yellow pages, or saw it elsewhere, they wouldn't know if it was a man or a woman.

What other trailblazing achievements stand out in your mind?

I started the first California chapter of the American Women's Society of CPAs while staving on the national board of the American Society of Women Accountants in 1974. I was also elected first chapter president for the Inland Empire affiliate. Our first meetings were about 15 to 20 members from about four counties in Southern California.

We all felt there were a lot of benefits to us being able to discuss our careers and opprtunities for advancement and other woman-related challenges for CPAs. At that time, women did not have the same career promotion opportunities and pay as men did. Things have really changed as it now seems that there are more women than men getting their accounting degrees.

What advice do you have for young CPAs?

I would tell them that, although it's a bit of a rough path starting out as a CPA, the rewards are many. By educating yourself and continuing to improve yourself, you will have a really great career. I just can't encourage the voting people enough. CPA
